Taking a holistic approach to production

We develop approaches to sustainable and circular production and test them in collaboration with students and industry partners in our microfactory. In doing so, we design materials, products and processes in such a way that resources remain within the cycle and can be reused.

Our research is interdisciplinary, bringing together partners from academia, industry and Culture to ensure the transfer of knowledge into society. In our useLAB, we develop innovative solutions for clothing, products and spaces – by combining traditional craftsmanship with digital technologies.

Key areas

Development through sustainable design strategies

We take a holistic approach to products, from the initial concept through to the prototype, and design them with the circular economy in mind – focusing on functionality, durability, aesthetics and recyclability.

Materials and supply chain

We scrutinise raw materials and supply chains. Together with our industry partners, we develop holistic solutions that conserve resources, reduce material usage and enable transparent, sustainable value creation.

Design in the real-world laboratory

At useLAB, we test processes for prototype development at every stage of the textile cycle – from fibre to recycling. To do this, we combine modern technology with traditional craftsmanship.

Everyday use of the product

We investigate how textile products are used and develop solutions that work in everyday life and win people over in the long term. At the same time, we promote the transfer of knowledge to society and encourage more conscious consumer behaviour.

Recyclability

We develop strategies for the reuse of materials and products. We take this into account right from the prototype stage and design products that can be recycled, in order to keep resources in circulation and prevent waste.
