Basic idea of ECTS

The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) was developed by the European Union as a tool to assess student achievements at European universities, make them comparable and hence make it possible to transfer them from the “host” university to the student’s home university.

ECTS therefore guarantees full mutual recognition of credits gained in one of the European member countries. Another benefit is that your course of study will not be prolonged due to a semester abroad.

ECTS points (credits): honouring your achievements

ECTS points (credits) describe your workload. 60 ECTS credits represent the workload for a full academic year; hence, 30 ECTS credits are generally taken in one semester. Credits are granted only if all course requirements including examinations are completely fulfilled.

The International Coordinator at your Faculty will let you know about the credits assigned to the individual courses.

It is of crucial importance that the credits you gain at the Hochschule Hannover are honoured at your home university. Therefore, you should definitely discuss and clarify the question of recognition with your Department’s  international coordinator or professor in charge, before you finalize your plans and depart for Germany.

The ECTS Learning Agreement  – your agreement with us

ECTS means that you enter into an agreement about your studies, the so-called ECTS learning agreement, before you take up your studies abroad. This is a form which you obtain from your Department’s International Coordinator. It specifies the courses you selected for your semester abroad and the corresponding credits. The agreement must be signed by yourself, the ECTS departmental coordinator in Hannover and by your university.

At the end of your semester abroad and upon successful completion of your courses, you will be issued a transcript of records which will, in addition to the credits, specify the grades you received.

ECTS grading scale
Examination results and other assessments are usually given in grades. There is a great variety of grading systems in Europe. They can be compared and made transparent by using the ECTS grading scale.
